Simhachalam Temple is one of the most famous Narasimha temples in South India, located in the scenic hills of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Dedicated to Lord Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Simhachalam Temple attracts thousands of devotees every day.

This ancient temple is renowned for its spiritual significance, unique rituals, and a rare deity form that combines both Varaha and Narasimha aspects. It is also considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites among the Vishnu temples in Andhra Pradesh.

The most important festival celebrated here is Chandanotsavam, when the sandalwood covering is removed and devotees can see the deity in its original form. During this time, thousands of pilgrims visit the temple.

Architecture

Simhachalam Temple is built in a beautiful blend of Kalinga and Dravidian architectural styles. The temple features intricately carved stone pillars, sculpted walls, and ancient inscriptions that reflect the artistic excellence of medieval South Indian temple construction.
The sanctum sanctorum houses the idol of Lord Varaha Narasimha, which remains covered with sandalwood paste throughout the year, giving the temple a unique spiritual identity.

Historical Background

Simhachalam Temple is believed to have been originally constructed in the 11th century CE by the Eastern Ganga dynasty. Later, the temple was expanded and patronized by the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire.

According to legend, Lord Narasimha appeared in his half-lion, half-human form to protect devotees and destroy evil forces. The temple became a major center of worship for followers of Lord Vishnu and continues to hold immense religious importance today.
